Meghalaya: 16-yr-old ‘gang-raped’ by 7 men in Jaintia Hills on New Year’s day, 6 arrested

In an unfortunate incident, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped by seven people in one of the villages in West Jaiñtia Hills District on January 01.

The relatives of the rape victim has filed an FIR against the 7 accused including two minors. The girl was taken to Ialong Civil Hospital for medical examination and also to receive treatment.

The investigating officer of the case, Dy. SP (Crime), Ms C.W. Lyngdoh told reporters today they had received an FIR from the relatives against the accused who had committed the 'shameful act'.

According to her, out of the 7 accused, five of the accused hailed from the same block. Meanwhile, the police have arrested 6 of the accused identified as Ribah Phawa (31), Libim Phawa (20), Mehi Dkhar (22), Kermiki Shylla (18) and two of the accused, who are juveniles.

Police said that they have booked all the accused under the various provisions of the POCSO Act. Meanwhile, West Jaiñtia Hills District, SP Lakador Syiem informed that he had already spoken to Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Shillong and the Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Jowai to provide assistance to the rape victim.
