SHILLONG:

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and former cabinet minister AL Hek has expressed disappointment over the party's inability to field candidates for Mawphlang and Mawryngkneng constituencies in the upcoming bye-polls.

"Being a national party ruling in the Centre, we don't have candidates for two constituencies in the bye-polls. It is shameful on my part as a BJP leader," he said, refusing to discuss the reason behind it.

Earlier this month, BJP state president Ernest Mawrie had announced that BJP will not field any candidates for Mawphlang and Mawryngkneng, given the fact that party membership in these two constituencies is below 1500.

Hek also informed that he will begin campaigning for Kingstone B Marak, the BJP candidate from Rajabala constituency from October 22. Hek said that the possibilities of BJP winning the seat will only be drawn after an 'assessment'. He maintained that “sympathy vote will play a crucial role" in the constituency, and the party will wait and watch what transpires.
