A provision in the Act makes it mandatory for every married man and woman to furnish a marriage certificate, registering every marriage in the state and ensure protection to divorced women.

SHILLONG:

Michael Syiem, convenor of the Maitshaprang Movement, has asked the state government to define the term “official purposes” and enlarge its scope to effectively implement the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012.

In a letter to the Minister of Registration, Syiem added that deletion of the term will defeat the very purpose of the Act, the reason it was unanimously passed.

“We sincerely urge the government to define the term ‘official purposes’, instead of deleting it, and enlarging its scope of implementation like enclosing the Scheduled Tribe/Caste certificate so that the purpose of the Act is served,” he said.

He reiterated the Act was passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to deal with the problem of unregistered broken marriages in the state, leaving women with children abandoned, with no maintenance to support the family.

Notably, a provision in the Act makes it mandatory for every married man and woman to furnish a marriage certificate, registering every marriage in the state, ensuring protection to divorced women as maintenance/child support. Further, they can contest in the court of law in case the same is denied.
