SHILLONG:

With an objective to enrol the youths of the state in the party, the opposition Congress launched its membership enrollment drive in Meghalaya on October 20.

Addressing the media, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national secretary in charge of Meghalaya, Sarifa Rahman informed that the membership drive will start from November 12 and continue till December 12.

“The age limit for enrollment is 18 to 35 years, so anybody who is under 35 and is willing to be a part of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and National Congress can enrol himself/herself in the organization”, she said while requesting the youth to download the IYC App for the enrollment process.

The launching of the membership was held in presence of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Vincent H Pala.

Sarifa further informed that there will be no separate election for the youth Congress and it will be held alongside the membership drive, adding that there will certain criteria.

The IYC national secretary expressed confidence that the membership drive will cross more than one lakh in the state.

“We have completed 1 lakh membership in Arunachal Pradesh (a state where Congress doesn’t have much MLAs). Meghalaya, we are in very good shape, we have very good leaders and active youth congress, so I believe we will cross one lakh in membership or maybe more than that”, she said.

When asked if it was not too late to revamp the Congress, Sarifa said that in tribal states it is just six months or one year before the election the organisation revives.

“Congress is very much active and I believe under the new PCC president, the party will revive itself in the state to form the government”, she exuded.

On people leaving the Congress, the IYC national secretary said that such people are selfish as they are not thinking about the organization.

“Just because the party is little weak today, it doesn't mean you betray the party and join the party in power. Such acts are selfish on part of the members”, she concluded.
