Citizenship Bill: Northeast suffers “biggest betrayal”, says Meghalaya LO
SHILLONG | Jan 8, 2019:
Meghalaya Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma came down heavily on the BJP-led government at the Centre for paving the way for the passage of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 in Athe Lok Sabha today.
Terming the government's move as the "biggest betrayal" to the people of Northeast and the whole country, Sangma questioned "Do they have the mandate to impose these kinds of agendas which are not acceptable by the people?"
The government of the day should understand the sensitivity and seriousness of this issue. "It is my firm belief that the leaders of this region, be it community leaders, social and civil societies' leaders, will not align with this agenda," he added.
