Shillong:

Accusing the government of delaying their demand to suspend police officials allegedly involved in killing the former general secretary of the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) Cheris S. Thangkhiew, Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep has warned that it will intensify agitations.

Addressing a gathering at the Malki ground on Wednesday, the secretary of Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep, Marbud Dkhar warned, “The agitations have been democratic ever since we started. But we will intensify our agitations and there will be surprise protests. We will not sit idle till we get justice.”

The group has been demanding the suspension of three police officials - Director General of Police R Chandranathan, Superintendent of Police of East Jaiñtia Hills Jagpal Singh, and East Khasi Hills SP (Traffic), Shailendra Bamaniya.

Dkhar criticised naysayers who claimed that the group is playing political games, saying, “In the Sur of Hynñiewtrep, there is no politics, there are no flags, but it is the voice of the masses. The people of Hynñiewtrep will continue to extend their support to the demand for justice for the family members (of Thangkhiew)”.

Later, speaking to the press, Dkhar said that they have tried to meet Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, but were told that he is in Delhi and will meet them after the Puja holidays.

He said that the group will meet Rymbui as soon as he returns to Shillong.

Meanwhile, members of the group, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh, said, “We will not rest until the government fulfils our demands. As for the next step of agitation, it will be decided in an executive committee meeting.”
