Manipur | Veteran state leader Phungzathang passes away

IMPHAL, December 20, 2018: Former minister of the state, Phungzathang Tonsing has passed away, aged 79, at Apollo hospital Delhi after struggling with lung cancer.

Born in 14 July 1939 at Bungpilon, Thanlon Sub division Churachandpur district, Phungjathang graduated from Guwahati University and he was also a head master of Bungpilon junior Higher Secondary before stepping into politics.

In 1985, he was awarded the best performance award on a Family Planning Programme and best performance award on Infant Mortality rate in 2014. In 1972, he was elected as a member of District Council from Ngazam Constituency (Unopposed) from Congress (I) ticket and became chairman, Autonomous District Council, Churachandpur.

In 1980, he was an elected member of Legislative Assembly from Thanlon Assembly Constituency from Congress (I) ticket and became minister of State for Medical/Sports/Publicity and Tourism.

In 1984, he was elected as member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Thanlon Assembly Constituency from Congress (I) ticket for the second term. He became minister of Health and Family Welfare. In 1990, he was elected as member of Legislative Assembly from Thanlon Assembly Constituency from Congress (I) ticket for the third term and became Minister of Public Health Engineering Department and Tourism.

In 1995, he was appointed as president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) during the tenure of Narashimha Rao.

In 2002, he was elected as member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Churachandpur Assembly Constituency from Indian National Congress ticket and became Minister of Irrigation and Flood Control Department/Tribal Development and Transport.

In 2007, he was again elected as member of Legislative Assembly from Churachandpur assembly constituency from Indian National Congress ticket for the second term in Churachandpur Assembly Constituency and became Minister of Power/Horticulture and Soil Conservation/Tribal Development and Hills.

In 2012, he was elected as member of Legislative Assembly from Churachandpur assembly Constituency from Indian National Congress ticket for the third term in Churachandpur assembly Constituency and became minister of Health and Family Welfare/General Administrative Department/Command Area Development Agency till 2015.

He was the Churachandpur district in charge minister from 2002 till 2015 and a member of All India Congress Committee (AICC) till 2016.
