Manipur: Trucks carrying betel leaves seized in light of govt. ban


CHURACHANDPUR, April 18, 2018: Following the state government's ban on transportation of betel leaves, the forest department aided by a team of police personnel seized two pickup trucks carrying 35 baskets of betel leaves which arrived from Guwahati via Mizoram.

Sources said that Forest Minister, Shyam Kumar personally came to Churachandpur on Monday night for the purpose of carrying out the task himself. The two trucks were intercepted at Buallian and Muallum villages at 8 pm and midnight respectively. The minister also spent the night taking stock of the situation before leaving for Imphal on Tuesday morning.

The seized contraband has been transported to the forest department's head office at Sanjenthong, Imphal. Range officer of the forest department, Churachandpur, Jamkhogin and the district police have taken the responsibility to escort the seized betel leaves themselves after flights cannot be arranged for transportation.

Meanwhile the price of betel leaves have escalated in the district and shopkeepers are discreetly charging double- rates from select customers.
