Manipur: Police constable opens fire at people killing 1; irate mob burns down constable’s house
Imphal, April 25, 2017: In what may be described as an act driven by anger, a police constable opened fire on the night of April 24 at a group of people leaving one person dead at around 10 pm.
The deceased person has been identified as 25 year old Khangembam Santosh Singh who was killed in Ukhongsang Mayai Leikai, Kangjeibung under Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district. He is a teacher at IRE School, Wangjing. He died at Thoubal hospital where he was taken for treatment. The dead body has been brought to JNIMS for post mortem. The Constable driver who opened the fire is identified as a 30 year old, Elangbam Rajesh, son of Elangbam Achou from Salungpham Mamang Leikai. He is currently under police custody and police has also seized a service pistol from him.
As per sources, there was a Thabal Chongba organised at the Ukhongsang Mayai Leikai, Kangjeibung last evening and there were few people playing the dice game in the area. A team of police arrived at the dice game and had some heated arguments, later Rajesh opened fire at Santosh. Meanwhile irate mob has burnt down the house of Rajesh. Imphal-Moreh road near Thoubal Athokpam has also been blocked in protest against the killing since early morning. They also damaged a bolero car, 4 diesel autos and 2 two wheelers.
A JAC formed against the killing has condemned the killing and termed the firing of 3 bullets at Santosh as a cold blooded murder. They resolved to not claim the dead body until the culprit, Rajesh is dismissed and a capital punishment awarded and also punch all other police personnel involved. Rajesh's services has meanwhile been terminated.
