Manipur gets its first Open Defecation Free (ODF) district

Senapati district was today officially declared the first Open Defecation Free (ODF) district in the state during a ceremony held at Mini Stadium, Senapati district. The declaration ceremony was attended by minister of PHED, Printing and Stationery, Losii Dikho as chief guest while secretary (PHED), Science and Technology, Government of Manipur, Nidhi Kesarwani and deputy commissioner of Senapati, Athem Muivah were guest of honour and functional president respectively.

The declaration ODF district was made by Losii Dikho in the presence other dignitaries and departmental officials. The minister also inaugurated Senapati Sanitary Toilet Complex constructed under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) SBM (G) constructed by Senapati PHE Division, PHED Manipur.

He said that Swachh Bharat Mission is a special project and it is implemented under PHED while adding that it has been targeted to make Senapati as the first district to achieve ODF which was accomplished today.

While conveying his gratitude to all stakeholders contributing for the achievement, the minister also said that it is the proudest moment for the people of Senapati and the state as a whole. He credited the immense efforts and contribution of the District Administration, concerned department officials and the people of Senapati district for such huge achievement.

'Senapati district was once the highest bandhs and blockades district in the state but today it has become very progressive and constructive changes is witnessed with the collective efforts of the people and the government', asserted Losii Dikho.

He further said that Senapati can contribute much more for the state and it has a very important role in sanitary sector while motivating the people of the district to continue conserving and protecting environment and make Senapati the cleanest district in the state.

Nidhi Kesharwani said that Senapati always had the account of achieving records while recalling the Prime Minister of India award to the district for excellence implementation of MGNREGS in 2010 to become the first district in the state to achieve such achievement in national level.

She also said that achieving ODF is the first step towards cleanliness, towards living a better life and giving a better environment to future generations, and also appealed the people to dispose garbage and other litters hygienically.

Athem Muivah said that it is an auspicious day for the people of Senapati to have declared as ODF in the state while most of the other states are yet to achieve the status.

He also said that even Manipur is expected to achieve the status of ODF by the end of this year and further lauded the sincere efforts of Losii Dikho for his leadership in making Senapati an ODF district.

As part of the declaration ceremony, the PHED minister also handed over ODF certificate to six villages in Senapati district namely Khaikho, Keizi, Tadubi, Mao Maram, Taphou Ngahang and Mao Taphou.
