IMPHAL:

A joint team of Manipur Police and Delhi Police on Monday arrested Manipur’s child ‘activist’ Licypriya Kangujam’s father Kangujam Kanarjit alias Dr KK Singh for allegedly duping people and cheating on them.

Kanarjit has been charged based on a criminal case (No 176/2015) under Sections 420 (Fraud), 324 (Assault) and 406 (Criminal breach of trust).

Kanarjit has been carrying out various activities under the Club 25 banner from his rented apartment at Porompat in Imphal East district.

According to reports, he sold out the building to three different individuals and duped them without the knowledge of the real owner.

It may be mentioned that Kanarjit was arrested by Porompat police on January 4, 2016, after a person named S Krishnadutta Sharma had lodged a complaint against him, however, he was soon released on bail and has been absconding since then.

His daughter Licypriya Kangujam has often made headlines with her environmental awareness activities among the public.

She started advocating against climate change in July 2018, and since then has been involved in various awareness campaigns.

She had claimed that the UN headquarters in Geneva had invited her in April 2019, however, The Free Press Journal in its report has stated that the claim made by Licypriya is fake and her father is reportedly a conman.

It has also been reported that Kanarjit has been accused of collecting funds for relief efforts for earthquake victims in the name of committees but the funds collected never reaches the beneficiaries.

It may be mentioned that Licypriya Team has also been seeking contributions for COVID relief efforts, however, it is still unclear if the funds collected in the name of COVID are actually a part of relief measures.
