IMPHAL:

All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader Bhakta Charan Das on Friday said that Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Govindas Konthoujam has submitted his resignation letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, however, he has so far not left the party.

This came amid the reports that at least eight other Congress MLAs are likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During a press conference in Imphal on Thursday, AICC leader Das, who is camping in Imphal to resolve the political crisis in the party’s state unit said a new president would be elected within seven days.

He said that he had spoken to the party MLAs either in person or over the phone, adding that a few of them, including MLA K. Joykishan, would be meeting him for further discussions.

According to the reports by The Hindu, Mr Das said that a prominent Congressman will be elected the new president so that the party wins the majority in the March 2022 Assembly election.
