Two African nationals held in Assam
Police arrested two Africans, including a woman, from a bus at Churaibari in Karimganj district in southern Assam on Thursday night for illegally entering the country.
Police have identified the arrested persons as Oladipudo Akanezacch (40), and Ruthrael Andisi (25).
According to police sources, they arrested the foreigners during routine checking at Churaibari, about 55 kilometres from Karimganj town, around 9 pm on Thursday.
The bus, bearing registration number, AS-25 CC-8658, was on its way to Guwahati from Agartala.
An official said that the man, Oladipudo, had a passport, but its validity date had expired around six months ago.
The woman, Ruthrael, had a valid passport but did not use it while entering Tripura from Bangladesh.
“As such, both of them entered India illegally, for which we held them,” an official said.
Oladipudo is a resident of Senegal in western Africa while Ruthrael hails from Kenya in eastern Africa. Their intention of entering India together, however, was not clear.
“Both of them can speak Bengali and Hindi fluently,” the official said.
Just about a week back, police arrested three Nigerian nationals from Churaibari.
Police have arrested several foreigners in Tripura and Karimganj district in the past few months for not having valid documents.
According to data, at least 14 foreigners (including Thursday night’s arrest) have been arrested by police in Karimganj district in the past two-and-a-half months.
