Assamese film Bridge makes it to India’s list of Oscar probables

Bridge, an Assamese movie, directed by budding filmmaker Kripal Kalita, has made it to India’s list of Oscar probables. In total, 12 films have made it to the list and one among them will be India’s official entry in the “Best International Film” category at the coveted Academy Awards next year.

“The film is about the ability of humans to stay resilient in the face of adversities. After all, life must go on,” Kalita says. Produced and directed by Kalita, the story focuses on Assam’s perennial flood problem through the life of a girl living by the banks of river Brahmaputra in rural Assam.

‘’My film is about emotions and relationships, and the manner in which people function and carry on with their lives when faced with hardships,” he says, adding that the movie, made with a budget of 35 lakh, is about a girl who is determined to make ends meet and get his little brother educated.

The crew started filming in May 2018 and the schedule lasted for 14 months, primarily in the flood-ravaged districts of Upper Assam, says Kalita. “My aim was to make it as real as possible,” adds the 43-year-old filmmaker.

Currently, the 89-minute-long Assamese film is making rounds of the film festival circuit and has earned several accolades including a “Special Mention” at the 51st International Film Festival of India in Goa in January 2021.

So, can we expect another Village Rockstars (another Assamese film that was India’s official entry to the Academy Awards 2019) with Bridge? “Well, it’s too early to even think of something like that,” concludes Kalita.
