Assam reports highest single-day COVID deaths


GUWAHATI | SEPT 13, 2020: 

The trend of rising COVID-19 deaths continued in Assam, with the state recording the highest single-day casualties on Saturday with 23 persons succumbing to the virus.

With the fresh deaths, the COVID toll in the state now stands at 453. Kamrup Metro district is leading the death toll at 92 followed by Dibrugarh (65), Cachar (30), Tinsukia (26), Karimganj (27), Kamrup Rural at 20 and Jorhat (20).

The districts of South Salmara, Dima Hasao and Biswanath have not recorded any deaths so far while the river island district of Majuli has reported only one death and Goalpara two deaths.

Taking cognizance of the alarming situation, Assam's health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted late Saturday evening, "Very sad and anguished to inform that 23 more COVID-19 positive patients have succumbed to the disease."

The positive cases too are sharply rising in the state. Till Sunday morning evening, Assam recorded 140471 COVID-19 positive cases in the state so far.

Addressing media persons on Saturday, Sarma said that in August itself, the state registered 68,000 positive cases while in the first ten days of September, about 30,000 cases have been recorded. "So by this trend, we are likely to have anything between 80,000 and 90000 cases by the end of September," he said.

Till Sunday morning, 108,329 patients have recovered while there are still as many as 31686 active cases undergoing treatment in various hospitals of the state.

So far, 1304 patients have been provided plasma.

The state had conducted 27 lakh tests until Saturday evening.
