Tokyo Olympics: Mirabai Chanu stands chance to get gold if Chinese weightlifter fails dope test

The gold medalist from China Zhihiu Hou will be tested by anti-doping authorities, and if she fails the test, India's Mirabai Chanu will be awarded Gold medal.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the 49 kg category now stands a chance to get a gold medal.

The gold medalist from China, Zhihiu Hou will be tested by anti-doping authorities, and if she fails the test, India's Mirabai Chanu will be awarded Gold medal.

Hou who bagged a gold medal with a total lift of 210 kg, has been asked to stay back in Tokyo for the test by anti-doping authorities, ushering hope that India may get gold.

Sources close to the development informed that the rules of the games clearly state that if an athlete fails to clear the dope test, the one who has won the silver medal would be awarded the gold.

Chanu opened the medal tally for India at the Tokyo Olympics, and also became the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari.

Her win was a historic moment for India, as she got a medal for the country on day one, which perhaps is an unseen feat to date.
