Tura, Dec 4,2017: In an effort to increase the popularity of an already popular sport, badminton, the East Garo Hills (EGH) District Badminton Association (DBA) is set to hold an open badminton tournament from Dec 7 to 9, in the town of Williamnagar at the Indoor stadium.
The open tournament has already attracted over a 100 contestants from across the region with many more likely to join the competition. The tournament has been restricted to players from within the state to ensure exposure to local talent.
“We have a lot of upcoming talent that needs be nurtured to get up to the national level of the sport and have as such kept the competition within the state. We have received a lot of interest from players from within the region and are hopeful of the tournament’s growth,” said Tuescaesar Marak, one of the organizers.
The organizers have promised attractive prizes to winners with the added glory of being crowned the champion of what is expected to be a keenly fought championship.
“Badminton is a growing sport and India is excelling the sport. It is time that people from our region too shone in the national limelight through hard work. This tournament is an effort at giving them a chance to showcase their skills,” said EGH DBA general secretary, Johnny Marak.
