Sikkim: Images of ‘littered’ football stadium goes viral; Former Indian captain slams authorities

GANGTOK, January 10, 2018: Images of Paljor Stadium which went viral on social media showed the pathetic condition of the Stadium, which was littered with broken alcohol bottles and nails recently after a music concert that was held.

Moreover, a “No football” sign was also found stipulating that no footballing activities are to be done until 18 January.

Baichung Bhutia, former Indian captain of football on Monday slammed the authorities for using football arena for non-footballing purposes and also posted images of the stadium being prepared for a musical event.

Recently, more images surfaced on social media, which showed that the stadium premises were strewn with broken alcohol bottles and other sharp objects like nails, making it dangerous for athletes.

The recent images show that the pitch was left unattended after the concert. There are still bottles lying around the stadium and shattered bottles in the playing area.

Despite the amount of criticism about hosting events leading to destruction of the pitch, the authorities at the Paljor Stadium ignored the voice of the state.

Bhaichung Bhutia was expected to raise this issue with the concerned authorities over the misuse of the pitch meant only for football. But the recent images also showed that the authorities did not pay attention to his words. Whether the issue will escalate to the higher authorities is still to be seen.
