OPINION | Has the spirit of Christmas dampened in Shillong?

~~~By Natasha Dkhar
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11)
It is that time of the year again when everyone gears up to celebrate the season of joy and forgiveness. An age old tradition passed down to us, Christmas season is welcomed by everybody from all walks of life, be it from the richest of the rich to the poorest of the poor. Everyone has their own way of celebrating but the question remains — Has the spirit of Christmas dampened in the city of Shillong as each year passes by?
While talking to a cross-section of people from Shillong, this is what they have to say :
** In this era where families don’t hangout together anymore, I think the spirit has dampened. Christmas is about family and I think that lately it has become a totally different scene altogether. People don’t take time to light up their houses anymore or even sit as a family to decorate the Christmas tree. I envy Puja and Diwali where people actually take up their time to celebrate unlike us, says S.Nongkhlaw
** Similarly, B Dohling also feels the same. “Yes it has dampened. Christmas carols have become quieter; no busy market places for shopping. The intense sense of Christmas season is gone,” he rued.
** P.Nongkynrih, however, reacted differently as he adds “Has it? I don’t think so maybe it’s just that people are busy with their own lives and careers”.
** Not just Christmas, other festivals as well like Durga Puja etc.People nowadays tend to love themselves more than their neighbours. They are ignoring others while they are too busy taking selfies — says P.Lyngdoh.
** The spirit may have dampened and all we can do is to take time from our busy schedule life and continue to celebrate Christmas like before. Christmas Carols need to be heard a little bit louder, families should leave aside everything and come together as one. Forgive people and also to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, says A.Warjri
While some say that Christmas spirit is dwindling due to the changing liefestyles, others are of the view that the the spirit of love and togetherness has been overtaken by the desire for materialistic outlooks.
