Nagaland: TR Zeliang tenders resignation as CM; paves way for Rio to take over

TNT Desk | Kohima, March 06, 2018:

Naga People’s Front (NPF) leader TR Zeliang has finally put his foot down and resign from the post of Chief Minister today afternoon.

His decision came after the BJP announced that it will siding with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) for formation of government in the state with former MP Neiphiu Rio as the Chief Minister.

It may be mentioned that Zeliang was unwilling to step down as the chief minister since he was convinced that the BJP will ally with the NPF to form the government. The NPF, which is part of the BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), was hopeful that its old friend, the BJP, will leave NDPP to form the government in Kohima with 26 NPF legislators.

However, the BJP, which had earlier aligned with the NDPP pre-poll, has chosen to stick with Rio leaving NPF at the losing end.

The BJP-NDPP alliance has the support of 32 MLAs in the 60-member assembly. BJP Nagaland unit president V Lhoungu had stated that the party’s MLAs decided to go with the pre-poll alliance partner, the NDPP, during a meeting in Dimapur on Sunday evening.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) are set to form the next government in Nagaland on March 8, with home minister Rajnath Singh expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
