Mizoram: Three held for burning ‘Reiek hill’, an important tourist spot

AIZAWL, February 8, 2018: Three people alleged for burning a forest in Reiek hill were arrested on Sunday. Reiek hill which is locally known as Reiek Tlang is an important tourist spot located near Reiek village about 29km from Aizawl, police said.

The accused identified as Lalrinmuana, Lalremruata and Lalnunthara belonged to Khawrihnim village under the juridiction of West Phaileng police station in Mamit district.

The incident took place at around 5pm, when the three miscreants set fire on three ranges for unknown reasons, police said.

Residents of Reiek village spotted the flame rushed to the spot and caught the miscreants. The accused were handed over to Kulikawn police, who later handed them over to West Phaileng police on the same night, police said.

Meanwhile, an organization working for the preservation of protected forest and wildlife, ASEP- Association for Environment Preservation vehemently condemned the three miscreants for burning one of the important tourist destinations not only in Mizoram but also in the world. The organization also lauded the locals for taking swift action and further asked the state government to take efforts for preserving and protecting wildlife.
