From Our Correspondent, TNT News | Tura, March 17, 2018:
Call it incompetency on the part of the police or smartness and quickness of the criminal, an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) on Friday managed to slip away quickly and escape police custody while he was being treated at the Tura Civil Hospital for some ailment.
William A Sangma, an elusive, notorious and most wanted criminal from Garo Hills, was arrested and was an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) lodged at Tura Jail.
The incident occurred at about 7:05 this morning when William took advantage of a distraction created by another UTP who was with him at the time of the incident.
According to West Garo Hills (WGH) police, the duo, William and another Rongsang A Sangma, had complained of medical problems and were thus admitted to Tura Civil Hospital last evening in the UTP cell.
“Preliminary reports available with us state that this morning when the nurses went into the UTP room, Rongsang created a diversion by trying to snatch a gun from the police personnel posted there. In trying to protect their arms, the duo were able to flee from the place, though Rongsang was apprehended before he could make it out of the Civil Hospital. William, however managed to escape,” said SP of WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
A high alert has been sounded following the escape of the former chief of the Achik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) which was a group of hardened criminals involved in various crimes including murder, extortion, kidnappings among other such activities in and around Garo Hills.
“We have mobilized extra teams to ensure he is caught again while also setting up naka points across all major exit points. Search parties have also been deployed to nab the criminal,” added the SP.
Police has also announced a cash reward for information leading to the capture of the dreaded criminal.
The former ANCA criminal seems to have made it a habit of escaping police custody after he initially ran away from custody in Mendipathar in 2014 to form a criminal gang. He was once again apprehended in Goalpara district by a joint team of police and army men before being pushed into Meghalaya in the month of March, 2017 before once again escaping today.
