Tura, September 13, 2017: The Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) has been infamous in many parts of Meghalaya for irregular electricity supply and lack of pro active staff at the disposal of customers and as if these allegations were not enough, another case of neglect has been shown by MeECL. The residents of Dobasipara locality in Tura have gone in darkness for the past three days after the inability of the MeECL to replace a transformer that went stopped functioning late Saturday evening. As per locals, the incident occurred on the same evening when a huge tree fell across the road on NH 51 blocking vehicular movement thereby creating traffic congestion.
“This is pathetic to say the least. If they are unable to repair a transformer in the heart of the town of Tura, we shudder to think about how they must be treating faults in the rural belt,” said UDP joint secretary, Anand Marak who paid a visit to some residents after complaints.
Interestingly, when the MeECL was contacted thy cited the reason being lack of transformers for the delay in restoration.
“I was told that they have ordered the transformer and it was on its way but the delay is inexplicable. They should have taken stock of the situation immediately and ensured that the power was back. We also want to question as to why extra transformers are not kept in the area to ensure complaints can be taken care of quickly,” said Anand.
