SHILLONG, Aug 12, 2017: As heavy rains continues to batter Meghalaya, the Meghalaya Energy Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) has released water from the Umiam Main Gate No 2 by 1.5 ft at 1.30 am on Saturday morning and again by 4 ft at 11.15 am.
Official sources informed that water was released twice today after the water level reached a danger level. Till the filing of this report, officials informed that the water level has established and is at 3217.24.
On Friday, the MeECL has informed that the water level at the Umiam lake was nearing the danger level and as a precautionary measures, the gates of the dam would likely be opened anytime on Friday or Saturday morning.
The Indian meteorological department has also issued a weather warning whereby heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places with isolated extremely heavy falls on August 12 and heavy rain likely to occur at isolated places on august 13 and 14 over Meghalaya.
