Meghalaya: Teacher abducted by suspected criminals from Bangladesh in South Garo Hills

Tura, Jan 21,2018: A 42 year old SSA UP has been kidnapped by suspected  border criminals today from the village of Megua Songma under Dimapara outpost in the South Garo Hills district.

The incident took place at about 2:50 am this morning when a group of about five criminals cut through the gate of the house of Etwilthon D Sangma before overpowering the people inside and tying them all up. The kidnappers after tying the family then took the teacher and are suspected to have crossed the border into Bangladesh.

“The house is a little isolated from the nearby village and so they were easy targets. As the family seemed better off than the rest it seems a case of preplanned kidnapping. We mobilized our forces immediately though we have been unable to nab the criminals,” said superintendent of police, SGH, AT Sangma.

The gang also took off with a motorcycle belonging to the family along with mobile phones of all members except for that of the victim. The motorcycle was later recovered by the police about 5 kms from the spot of the incident after it was abandoned by the criminals.

“They had rounded up everyone in the house and tied them before making off with the victim. He is a teacher in a local SSA school. His wife too is a teacher in a government LP school,” said a family member.

Sources however stated that no demand was made to the family of the victim as yet till the filing of the report.

Family members of the victim have appealed for the safe release of the teacher with the Achik Youth Council (AYC) condemning the incident.

“The incident is condemnable as it involves a teacher who has been doing his utmost to better educate children. We demand his immediate release and ask the administration to try its hardest to secure his safe release,” said Silning Sangma, a member of AYC.
