Meghalaya: Sohra landslide kills 2-yr-old; traffic comes to a standstill for hours!

Sohra, June 17, 2017: A 2 year 10 month old child identified as Larisha Sohtun was killed today due to a landslide which occurred  today morning at 3:00 am at Lad Kyntong, Mawjrong. Larisha daughter of  Skanisha Sohtun  of Mawjrong  was swept away along with the house.

Vivek  Syiem, MPS  SP City on speaking to TNT- The Northeast Today said that the victim was  recovered from the mud rubble and was immediately brought to Swer PHC but declared brought dead. After investigation the body was  handed over to the  family members on receiving Post Mortem exemption order from Smti JM Umdor, MCS, Sohra Subdivision.

Several landslides occurred in many places along the Shillong-Sohra-Shella road on Saturday. When contacted, PWD SDO in Sohra told TNT- The Northeast Today that a major land slide occurred at Umtngngar at around 4 am adding that on account of this, many vehicles were stranded in the road for hours.

The SDO PWD informed that they had managed to clear the road till late Saturday evening. He also informed that landslides occurred in three places at Umstew village near Laitkynsew in Sohra which also led to a huge traffic jam for nearly three to four hours. Pyrbot added that there were minor landslides at Shella, Khliehshnong, Sohra and even in Khatar Shnong.
