Meghalaya: Senior Congress party member resigns to contest upcoming elections

Tura, Dec 17,2017: Senior party worker for the Congress party in West Garo Hills (WGH), Olpiash N Arengh, recently quit the party after a period of 15 years in an effort to make a mark as an independent candidate from the Rongjeng constituency in East Garo Hills.

Arengh had submitted his resignation on Nov 29 and will join the fray with as many as 10 more contestants from the constituency. Yesterday, the NPP MDC from Daurgre, and deputy chairman of the GHADC, Mettrinson G Momin resigned to contest from Rongjeng after being denied a ticket from the party. Like the former NPP MDC, Arengh too will contest as an independent candidate.

“I was born and raised in Rongjeng and wish to contribute back to the place. My agenda will be on development of the region and the people of Rongjeng,” said Sangma on the reason for contesting the elections.

Arengh was earlier the Block Congress Committee (BCC) president for Tura and also acted as a delegate to the MPCC. He was also a part of the party’s Seva Dal. He had also tried for a ticket to contest the MDC elections

The Rongjeng constituency will see as many as 10 contestants for the seat, including current legislator, Sengnam Marak from the Congress, Jim Sangma (NPP), BJP’s Rikman G Momin, Raphius Sangma, Barthush Sangma (UDP), former MLA Desang Sangma (NCP), Janseng Sangma, Walseng Sangma amongst others.
