Tura, January 15, 2018: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is making headlines again for misusing of funds. The National People’s Party (NPP) led Opposition mercilessly slammed the Congress led Executive Committee (EC) for withdrawing a staggering amount of Rs. 28 crores from central funds released by Union tribal Affairs ministry.
The Opposition has now demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged misappropriation. Earlier too, similar allegations had been hurled by the Congress led opposition against the then ruling NPP led coalition, which had been accused of misappropriating an amount of over Rs 60 crores. The allegations also come against the backdrop of the GHADC struggling to pay its employees for over 14 months now.
“This money was recently given by the Tribal Affairs Ministry for developmental activities of all GHADC jurisdiction areas and not for the development of selected MDCs,” said leader of the opposition Denang T. Sangma of the NPP.
According to him, the Boston Marak headed EC withdrew the entire funds without following proper procedures.
“They failed to provide tenders for works to be taken up through the scheme. The funds were to be allocated to each MDC constituency based on the projects to be taken up. The ruling members were selected without following any proper procedure,” added Denang.
The NPP leader further added that the Congress EC even forced the officer-in-charge to issue cheques in the name of contractors to withdraw money.
“This has to be the biggest scam by the Congress in the history of the GHADC and we will leave no stone unturned to ensure necessary action is taken against the perpetrators,” asserted Denang.
Denang also questioned the irresponsible acts in the backdrop of employees of the GHADC being denied salaries at one point by almost 15 months. Though about 3 months salaries were cleared, GHADC employees still have a full year’s salaries due.
