Meghalaya: Miner’s body found in abandoned vehicle at Diengpasoh

The body of a coal miner was found abandoned inside a tourist vehicle at Diengpasoh, East Khasi Hills district on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place at around 9pm on Tuesday evening, when the police were on one of their regular checking in Diengpasoh. They stated that they had signalled the a Tata Sumo vehicle to stop for a check but instead, the driver sped away. On seeing this, the police went after the car and managed to intercept it at Mawkhanu. However, the occupants of the vehicle had already fled into a nearby jungle by the time the police got to the vehicle. On checking the vehicle, police instead found Rajbongshi’s body.

The victim has been identified, on Wednesday, as Naresh Rajbongshi, 31, a coal minerwho worked at a quarry in Myndihati, Khliehriat in the East Jaintia Hills district of the state.

The police have apprehended one of the occupants of the vehicle, while the other three gave themselves up. They were identified as Vicky Baglary, 21, Gulzar Hussain, 18,Hari Rajbongshi, 25 and Joydeep Rajbongshi, 26.

During the interrogation, the men revealed that the deceased had died when a boulder fell on his head while he was working at the quarry. They claimed that they were taking his body back to his home in Silbari located in Assam.

The occupants did not contact the police in Khliehriat about the death as the quarry the deceased was working in was illegal.
