Shillong, November 27, 2017:Unhappy over the lackadaisical attitude of the corporation towards their demands, the MeECL Progressive Workers Union on Monday decided to stage an indefinite strike from December 12.
The union which comprises of workers from across the State took the decision after the meeting of the executive committee of the Union which was held at the MeECL head office at Lumjingshai.
Earlier in the day, more than hundreds of the members of the union from across the State had also staged a sit-in-demonstration outside the main gate of the cooperation office. During the protest, they shouted slogans and carried placards displaying their various demands.
Later while speaking to media persons, a member of the union, Mantiphrang Lyngdoh Kiri said that they have decided to go for an indefinite strike by ceasing to work from December 12.
Stating that with December 12 being a holiday, Mantiphrang said that only the employees who are working in the control rooms and powers house will kick off the indefinite strike by not attending their respective duties.
He informed that some of their demands include releasing of arrears pending since 2015, Provident Found, ESI, Gratuity leave among many others.
Mantiphrang however informed that Labour Commissioner, B Mawlong on November 3, had suggested that the dispute should be settled amicably between the management of MeECL and the workers.
“But till date no one has called us for talks which compelled us to take this drastic steps,” he added.
