Journalists of Meghalaya came under one umbrella to express their solidarity with Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim, whose house was attacked by unknown miscreants two days back, by carrying out a silent procession in the city today.
Media persons from various organisations across the state joined the silent march which took off from Shillong Press Club premises in Lachumiere at around 2.30 pm today.
Media persons walked the streets of Shillong carrying banners bearing messages sent by various media unions across the country, to protest against the attack on freedom of the press. Mukhim was also seen marching along with other journalists.
The renowned columnist came under attack on Tuesday night when her residence was targeted by motorbike borne masked miscreants who lobbed a petrol bomb at her premises, causing no property damage except blackened walls.
The incident evoked criticisms from media unions across the country even as journalists term this attack as an attempt to undermine the freedom of the press.
In line with this, the media organisations have urged upon the concern authorities to probe into the matter and nab the people responsible in this heinous act and to punish them in accordance with the law of the land.
