Meghalaya: Good Friday as working day! Govt intervenes, BSNL revokes notification

Amidst criticisms, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has revoked the notification of making ‘Good Friday’ as working day following the intervention of the Meghalaya Government.

There were reports stating that the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has declared a working day on “Good Friday” (March 30).

Health and Family and Welfare Minister, AL Hek and Home Minister James PK Sangma met BSNL General Manager Telecom District, BSNL, P G Nirmal today deliberate on the matter.

Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Hek informed that the order to open the offices on Good Friday was taken by the BSNL higher ups and not by the Centre.

He also informed that the notification which was actually from the BSNL corporate office was also revoked. Hek said no such notification was either issued to or received by the State government, BSNL or the North East Council and it was only from the corporate office of the BSNL requesting the accounts and consumer section to be open considering the financial year.

The Health and Family Welfare Minister informed that they have requested the BSNL to issue a notification that it is not mandatory for all the staff to attend offices on March 30.

“The notification should cater to only staff working in the account section and consumer service center,” Hek said.

He said that under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, Good Friday is listed as a list of holiday adding that the particular day is not a working day for Central or state government offices within the state.

Meanwhile, Home Minister appreciated the BSNL for positively responding to the call of the State Government by taking the account the sentiments of the people of the State.

Earlier, several NGOs and political parties have strongly opposed to the decision of the BSNL to declare March 30 as a working day.
