Meghalaya: GNLA loses another cadre as ‘misled’ youth joins mainstream

Yet another cadre of the proscribed Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) surrendered before the people without arms on Monday afternoon, thereby reducing the strength of the outfit to a single digit, police said.

The surrendered cadre identified as Bappus D Shira @ Tapsro (25) hailing from Simakona village under Rongara PS had contacted the local church leaders & surrendered without arms before SGH police at SP office Baghmara, South Garo Hills.

Police informed that while in GNLA, the surenderee used to be with the outfit’s chief Lt. Sohan D Shira and also had several narrow escapes during encounters with police, at Halwa Bilda, Rongsu Banagittim and at Bolbokgre SGH.

Prior to his joining the GNLA, he was also with ANVC-B and was trained at Pendengru forest. He initially used to help GNLA by supplying uniform materials from Bangladesh.

He formally joined the outfit in Feb 2017 and accompanied Sohan till then. In SGH, he was also helping GNLA to cross over to and fro to Bangladesh via Simakona and Horipur villages.

He also claimed to have visited Mymensing and Durgapur for buying supplies for GNLA and personally bringing them along with him.
