Meghalaya: Former CM Dr Donkupar Roy to assume office as new Speaker

With the swearing in of Conrad Sangma as the state’s 12 Chief Minister and the induction of 11 MLAs into the Conrad- led cabinet, UDP chief Donkupar Roy was also bestowed with a responsibility of presiding over the sessions of the Legislative Assembly and to maintain order and discipline within the House.

Former Chief Minister, Dr Donkupar Roy has confirmed that he will assume as the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

“I wanted a responsibility which is outside the Government. This is the first time in my political career that I will be holding the post of an Assembly Speaker,” Dr Roy told newsmen on the sideline of the swearing-in-ceremony of the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleague at Raj Bhavan today.

When asked about the question raised by HSPDP president Ardent M Basaiawmoit over the UDP’s decision to back the Government which the BJP is part off, he said that the UDP and HSPDP had entered into a pre-poll alliance adding that the two parties are expected to work in close coordination.

“The decision of backing the non-Congress Government was very part of the understandings between the two parties,” he said.

Meanwhile, NPP senior legislator Prestone Tynsong said that the question of him being the CM does not arise. “All the 19 MLAs of the NPP have unanimously endorsed the decision to elect Conrad K Sangma as our leader,” he said.
