Meghalaya: Ex govt employee set to contest upcoming election from Mahendraganj constituency

Tura, Jan 15,2018: After receiving an overwhelming support from his supporters, Roberth S Sangma, a former employee of the DRDA in South West Garo Hills (SWGH), recently quit his job as the district program manager (DPM) and is set to contest in the upcoming elections. An ex member of the NPP, Sangma quit from the party on December 20 and has decided to contest as an independent candidate.

The decision to contest as an independent has come as a big blow to the National People’s Party (NPP) after Sangma quit the party due to pressure from his supporters to contest. He is set to contest from the Mahendraganj seat under SWGH.

Sangma said the decision to contest came after pressure from over 4000 supporters who wanted him to be their mode of expression of their aspirations.

“As a local boy, my supporters felt that I should contest for their sake and I relented. They want me to work for their dreams and aspirations for development. My area requires a lot of attention and I am hoping to be the catalyst for the change,” said Sangma on the reason for contesting.

Sangma last worked as the District Program Manager under DRDA in SWGH. He was posted in WGH earlier.

The Mahendraganj seat is set to see at least four candidates vie to represent the constituency. Sitting MLA and wife of Meghalaya CM, Dikkanchi D Shira is likely to contest on a Congress ticket. The BJP is likely to field Premananda Koch while the NPP will field Sanjay Sangma for the seat.
