The body of a man from the village of Mitapgre under Chokpot in South Garo Hills, who allegedly drowned 6 days ago was recovered yesterday near the same place where he was supposed to have drowned while catching fish on the day of the elections that is on February 27.
According to sources, Sadin Ch Marak, a resident of Mitapgre, had gone to the village of Silkigre to the river to catch fish after voting on election day. While details are unclear as to what exactly happened, from the look of things, Marak may have dived into the river and hit a stone on the river bed, leading to his death from drowning. A picture of Marak showed a wound on his head which could have been the reason for his accidental death.
“His body was recovered yesterday on March 5 from the same spot where he allegedly drowned. However we are yet to ascertain the cause of death. He was fishing in the river Dareng though his dead body could not be recovered for over five days despite locals, policemen and F&ES personnel searching for him. His body resurfaced yesterday,” said district police chief, Abraham T Sangma.
Locals however stated that the place where the man drowned is known for drowning and local folklore has gone on about an underwater demon which kills people by drowning, though there are no indications to prove the same to be true.
