Meghalaya: Cremation of Seng Khasi’s Elder faces stern opposition from locals
SHILLONG, August, 11, 2017: The residents of Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem on Friday strongly opposed the cremation of the president of the Sengbah ki Nongshat Nongkhein, late Kulam Nongrum at the cremation ground near the village, since it was in violation of the agreement which was signed in 2010, where it was decided that no cremation would take place near the residential area.
The incident took place while the family members were carrying late Nongrum’s body to the cremation ground of the Seng Khasi at Lum Phatok for cremation as per the traditional rituals and practice of the Khasis.
To the surprise of the family members, the villagers came out to protest and shouted that this is in clear violation of agreement which was signed between the Seng Khasi Mylliem and Dorbar Shnong. The people protested that the cremation ground is located close to the schools and the nearby river of the village.
On receiving the information, the district police rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and to prevent any kind of unwarranted incident.
Talking to newsmen, Rangbah Shnong of Madan Iing Syiem, Hamphel Khyriem said that the people of the village are opposing this cremation since its in clear violation of the agreement which was signed between the Dorbar Shnong and the Seng Khasi Mylliem.
He also claimed that the Seng Khasi disrespected the agreement by choosing to cremate the body of the president of Sengbah ki Nongshat Nongkhein at the cremation ground at Lum Phatok.
Meanwhile, the Seng Khasi Mylliem president, Arwel Rynjah instead accused the Dorbar Shnong that they had force them to signed the agreement at the time when one J Nongklaw had been cremated at this same place.
Finally, the last rite of president of the president of the Sengbah ki Nongshat Nongkhein was completed admist tight security of the police.
