As the date for Ampati polls draws closer, incidents of cash seizures have been coming to light as security is beefed up in the constituency. In a similar incident, poll bound Ampati saw another cash seizure totaling close to Rs 5 lakhs from a vehicle last evening, making it the second time money has been seized in the run up to elections to be held on May 28.
The seizure was made yesterday by an election team containing flying squads and surveillance who intercepted a vehicle and seized Rs 4.95 lakhs from an alleged businessman from Mankachar. The seizure was made from the police check point at Monabari village of Ampati constituency on Thursday, close to the border with Assam
The businessman, Abu Jiyat Shah claimed that the money was meant for purposes of business in Meghalaya. The place of seizure falls under the Ampati constituency and with the model code of conduct in place, amounts of over Rs 50,000 are not allowed to be carried in cash.
“The money was seized last evening at about 6:30 from the vehicle of the person,” confirmed DD Shira, ADC of South West Garo Hills district.
On May 5, an amount of Rs 4,29,800 was seized from another man who claimed to be the VEC secretary with the money allegedly meant for payment for MGNREGS work.
