Shillong, Oct 16, 2017: Choosing politics over bureaucracy, senior bureaucrat Himalaya Shangpliang has finally decided to relinquish his position as the director of the Social Welfare department on October 18.

Besides the position of Mission Director of National Rural Health Mission, the senior IAS officer however will continue to hold the position as the Secretary in charge of Health and Family Welfare till his retirement.

It may be mentioned that Shangpliang on August 10 last had applied for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) giving three months’ time to the government.

When contacted, Shangpliang was not available for comments as his mobile was out of reach.

Shangpliang is among the few bureaucrats who will contest the upcoming Assembly polls in the State from Mawsynram constituency.
