Meghalaya: Air Deccan conducts test flight from Umroi Airport; to commence regular operations from May 1

The low cost carrier Air Deccan today conducted its test flights from the Shillong Airport at Umroi today even as it will begin its commercial operations under the Regional Air Connectivity Scheme or Ude Desh Ke Aam Nagrik (UDAN) from May 1.

It may be mentioned that The ‘Ude Desh Ke Aam Nagarik’ (Udan) is a regional air connectivity scheme with the objective to make flying affordable for the masses, to promote tourism, increase employment and promote balanced regional growth. It also intends to put life into un-served and under-served airports

The first flight from Kolkata today which is a 19-seater aircraft landed at the Shillong airport with officials of the company which was given a water salute at the airport.

The officials of Deccan Airlines commended the infrastructures of the Umroi Airport.

Meanwhile, a senior official of the AAI said the firm has started the operations in  6 out of  12  routes and the remaining routes will be operational in a couple of days.

He also said that the firm would operate from Shillong six day in a week.

Besides Shillong, Air Deccan also conducted test flights from Agartala and Dimapur today. The commercial operations from the airport at Agartala and Dimapur will also begin from May 1.

A senior official of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) inbformed that they have conducted the test flights for all the three airports adding that tikets booking for the flights from the three airports is also open. The senior official of the AAI also informed that the airline will operate in these routes six days a week.

In the first phase starting May 1, the airline will start operations on the sectors like Kolkata-Agartala, Agartala-Shillong and Shillong-Dimapur.

“Additional routes in the North East will be added over the next few weeks to Aizwal and Imphal,” the official said.

The airline has three planes in its fleet and is expecting to have one more in the next few weeks, the official said.

Asked about the timeline for starting operations from airports at Andal and Bagdogra in West Bengal, the airline official said: “We are awaiting clearances for airport readiness from some of the airports in Kolkata network. We will announce the operations post that.”

The website of the Air Deccan shows that the flight from Shillong till Agartala will be available from May  1 and  the price of the flight  is Rs  1720.

It may be mentioned that under the government’s Udan regional connectivity scheme, air fares are capped at Rs 2,500 per person for an hour’s flight to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in which the government will provide subsidy for flying with such low fares.
