As the major political parties in the state are rallying behind their key candidates for the upcoming Assembly poll, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) too has resounded its election bugle by announcing its first list of candidates who will compete in the poll battle.
The AAP on Monday announced the names of four candidates — Wander Lapang, Peter A Dohkrut, Dedrict Binong and Daross Ramsiej. The trio will be competing from Umsning, Mawlai, Nongpoh and Mawkyrwat constituencies respectively. The AAP decided to enter the poll battle only after state leaders met party leader Rakesh Sinha, who is also the NE observer, last week to discuss the poll situation in the state.
“We hope to get more candidates and win few seats. We are not expecting much but hoping that our candidate would win and fulfill people’s aspirations,” AAP state president Wanshua Nongtdu told newsmen at a press briefing in Shillong here on Monday.
Nongtdu informed that they have received few calls from Shillong and hoped that they will be able to declare the second list very soon. “We are hoping to field 35 candidates,” he added.
Stating that the Congress is on the verge of collapse and the BJP failed to grab the attention from the local populace, Nongtdu said “We have a good chance as the wave of the BJP is not being felt much in Meghalaya while that of the NPP, the chances are high only in Garo Hills.”
The AAP state president also informed that the party has not yet decided about pre or post poll alliance.
It may be mentioned that this is not the first time that the AAP has contested in the Assembly election in the state. In 2013, the party entered the fray but failed to make an impact.
