Tura, Jan 21,2018: A total of 17 coal trucks were detained by the district administration of East Garo Hills near the town of Rongjeng after they were found to be carrying coal using challans originating in Jaintia Hills.
The trucks that have been detained were asked to produce valid documentation for their release as a case has been registered at the Rongjeng PS.
The detention comes in the wake of coal transport that restarted after the order by the Supreme Court allowing for the transportation for a period of 4 months.
“We are awaiting an order from the magistrate who worked in the siege before the vehicles are compounded and released for further action,” said a highly placed source in the transport department.
The vehicles are currently being kept near the transport check gate in Rongmil until further action.
“Garo Hills has very few challans left after the last transportation and the same may have led some desperate businessmen to seek challans from others districts for the movement of coal. They were caught during routine checks by the magistrate on duty,” added the source.
A DMR team is also expected to look into the challans to see if the same are genuine or fake depending on which further action is expected against the vehicles detained.
