Manipur: Poppy plantation destroyed to combat drug menace

Imphal, January 31, 2018: Close on the heels of formation of state level committees to combat the drug menace in Manipur, a combined team of Imphal East district police and Narcotic Affairs and Border (NAB) destroyed more than five acres of poppy plantation worth around INR 25 lakh at Chanung Khunjing hill range under Sagolmang police station in Manipur.

Sources said, the combined team carried out the operation as a part of the massive drive against poppy cultivation at different districts in the last few days.

Similar operations were also held at the hilly terrain near Sangkhai village of Ukhrul district recently. A team of Kangpokpi district police and NAB also destroyed large tracts of poppy plantations at Thangjing village hill range under Saikul sub division.

It may be mentioned that for coordination and control of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the State, the government has reconstituted the Multi Disciplinary Level Coordination Committee, in supersession of the order issued in 2006.Chief Secretary RR Rashmi will head the 16 member Committee as the Chairman while Additional Chief Secretary (Home) will be the Vice Chairman.
