Imphal, April 16, 2017: The lawyers of Manipur have decided to raise their voice against the amendment of the Advocate Act of 1961 by the Law Commission of India. They have threatened to launch an agitation in New Delhi in thsi regard.
Spokespeson of Bar council of Manipur (BCM), A Jagjit while speaking to reporters said tha a few provisions had been added to the existing Advocate Act of 1961 which is not justified: As per the amendment, if a lawyer loses any case, she/he is liable to pay a sum of Rs, 3 lakhs and the entire case expenses to the client.
It also allows advocates from foreign countries to practice in India, which he added is a violation of rights of Indian lawyers.
A signature campaign will be launched first and if it proves to be ineffective, then a series of protests will be launched by the BCM, Jagjit stated.
