SHILLONG, Nov 19, 2017: The meritorious students of the West Shillong Constituency were on Saturday felicitated with the 6th Academic Achiever’s Excellent Award at Hindu Mission Lower Mawprem, Shillong.

The programme, organised by the 18 West Shillong Youth Wings of the United Democratic Party (UDP), was held with a purpose of acknowledging and encouraging the students of the area to aim higher and to strive harder to achieve their goals.

Speaking at the function, former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, PJ Bazely said that it is a great honour to be part of the programme to felicitate the meritorious students as this is a step towards identifying and acknowledging their contribution and their hardwork.

“Organizing such programmes not only highlights societal contribution but it also serves as an encouragement to other students who will be giving their examinations in the years to come,” Bazely said.

“Education is not only for gaining knowledge but it is also a tool to eradicate the ills in society and it paves the way for society to grow,” he said adding “Determination and perseverance is swiftly followed by success and will enable one to achieve their goals.”

He maintained that majority of the Indians who are literate are young people below the age of 35 years old and therefore, it is clear that the young people will lead this nation to a new tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Shillong West legislator Paul Lyngdoh said that education empowers a person with a tool to enlighten the society, to attain wisdom and it is the lighting of a spark.

“I congratulate the meritorious students who have managed to overcome all barriers through their sheer hardwork and determination. It should serve as an inspiration to other youth of the state,” he added.
