NATIONAL | June 8, 2019:

Maharashtra police arrested a man with over nine lakh followers on the TikTok app on charges of housebreaking and robbery of 150g gold ornaments along with a Rs 4.75 lakh mobile phone.

A resident of Kurla, Abhimanyu Gupta was arrested from his residence after Mumbai Police discovered evidence suggesting that Gupta may have been involved in a crime which took place in January of this year.

An investigation into the matter began after an elderly couple approached Juhu Police on January 19, alleging that someone had broken into their house and made away with gold ornaments and a mobile phone.

While closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage initially retrieved from the elderly couple's building did not result in any breakthroughs, a thorough inspection of more footage led investigators to a clear image of the culprit.

Based on evidence collected by them, police arrested Gupta on May 28. However, they were unable to get him to tell anything about his alleged involvement in the robbery.

Several days of intense interrogation finally bore fruit when Gupta broke down in front of police personnel and confessed to having carried out the theft.

Based on his inputs, police officials recovered stolen items from one of Gupta's friend's resident who claimed that the accused had kept it with him by claiming them to be his wife's ornaments.

The investigating officer (IO) Hari Biradar told Mid-Day that the accused is a 'habitual offender' and has been named as an accused in as many as four to five cases against him.

Gupta was produced before a court on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody.

Investigators are also probing his role in other cases of a similar nature.
