The Shillong Times editor held guilty of contempt by Meghalaya HC

SHILLONG, March 8, 2019: The Shillong Times editor Patricia Mukhim and publisher Shobha Chaudhuri, was on Friday, found guilty of contempt by the Meghalaya High Court.

The court imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each on Mukhim and Chaudhuri, who are required to pay up within a week, failing which they could be imprisoned for six months and could even face a ban on the newspaper daily.

The contempt order relates to two stories published in The Shillong Times in December last year, which talked about a court order seeking better facilities for retired judges and their kin. One of the articles, titled "When judges judge for themselves", has been deemed to "scandalize the order of this honourable court".

Mukhim and Chaudhuri had previously tendered an "unconditional apology" on February 1, but the bench ruled it as a means to "avoid punishment".

More details are awaiting.
