Mizoram | PRISM writes to UN to ensure Citizenship Amendment Bill is not passed

AIZAWL, March 8, 2019: People's Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) party on Thursday sought the intervention of the United Nations to ensure that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill doesn't become an Act.

In a letter sent to the UN Special Rapporteur, PRISM said the passage of the bill is extremely dangerous for the people of Mizoram who are recognised as indigenous people by the world body. It added that it was a deliberate attempt to violate the rights of the indigenous people of the state.

PRISM expressed anguish over the Centre's 'attempts' to violate the United Nation Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) even as the country was a signatory to the declaration. The letter was sent to Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, Special Rapporteur-cum- chairman of the working group on the rights of indigenous people, PRISM said.
