TURA | May 16:

The Garo Students' Union (GSU) has sought the suspension of a chowkidar of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Zikzak over allegations of negligence.

In a written complaint to the deputy commissioner of South West Garo Hills, the GSU-Ampati unit alleged that Bablu Mahanta, the caretaker of the school buildings, hostel rooms and properties of the school, was not giving his due attention to the school and was found missing during checks.

"As a chowkidar, he must stay in the quarters provided to him but he refuses to do that," said the complaint by GSU.

As per reports, there have been two cases of theft in the school in the past 2 months, firstly on April 18 and the next one on May 9. During the theft, computers, ceiling fans, documents of teachers have been stolen. Two police cases have also been filed in this regard.

The NGO stated that it was found that the chowkidar was missing on both nights of theft.

"The teachers and students have vacated the school due to the ongoing COVID – 19 lockdown. The two instances of theft could have been avoided if the chowkidar was present in the campus and doing his duty. It is his negligence that allowed thieves to enter and loot," said Salman Sangma, president of the NGO.

The NGO stated that given the circumstances, they have sought the immediate suspension of the chowkidar over his apparent negligence.
