Meghalaya: 3 drown in 60-ft ringwell in Shillong; bodies yet to be retrieved

SHILLONG | May 09, 2019:

In an tragic incident, three people lost their lives after they drowned in a 60-ft deep ring-well in Diengiong villager under Mawdiangdiang Outpost in Shillong on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at around 11.00 am this morning. According to the police, the three men identified as Banplielad Syiem (29), Lamphrang Lyngdoh (29) and Warles Kharsyntiew (31), all hailing from Lumkseh lama in Umroi, Ri Bhoi District, were trying to install a water pump inside a ring-well when the incident happened.

It was informed that one of them went down to loosen the rope tied to the cemented wall rung but due to the smoke emanating from the water pump, he lost his consciousness. Seeing this the other two went down to help him but all of them got stuck inside the well.

In the meantime, owing to the rise in the water level, the trio drowned inside the well.

Till the filing of this report, the bodies of the trio are yet to be retrieved. The personnel of Meghalaya Emergency and Fore Emergency along with the State Disaster Response Force and Home Guard are still at the spot, trying to pull out the bodies.
